Additional Information

The Plano is our motorsport shoe that doesn't really look like a motorsport shoe. Well, except for the tire tread bottom. And a few subtle cues in its silhouette. But other than that, with its canvas and suede upper and fresh striped details, it skews more low profile sneaker than on-track favorite. And that's kind of what we like best about it. Because, while our favorite driving shoes will always be our favorite driving shoes, there's always room in our closet for a new pair of kicks.

Features:

  • Canvas and suede upper, with striped detail at heel and inner lining
  • Lace closure for a snug fit
  • Breathable EcoOrthoLite® sockliner for optimum fit and comfort
  • Grippy rubber outsole with tire tread print at bottom
  • Rounded driver's heel
  • Embroidered PUMA No. 1 Logo at tongue
  • PUMA Formstrip with stitching details at medial and lateral sides

Plano Men's Shoes 5 5 1 1
Everyday usable driving shoe with conservative look First, know that the sole on this show is slightly wider than that of a Drift Cat and far wider than that of a Speed Cat, so it's ideal for the pedal box of, say, a typical sports sedan but might not work as well in a car with less clearance or smaller pedals. It is still significantly narrower than you'll find in a shoe which was styled without thought to driving, and it's likely usable in any car with a pedal box larger than a formula car. Second, know that the sole has about the flexibility of a Drift Cat, and is more flexible than the Speed Cat, but seems a bit more shock absorbent than the Drift Cat, meaning it has perhaps slightly less pedal feel but is better for walking. The upshot of the sole width, flexibility, and shock absorbance, plus a fairly flat slope from heel to toe, is that this is a driving shoe you can wear all day in a variety of clothes, and it works very well in a range of cars. It also has the benefit - rare in a driving shoe - that you can do a fair bit of walking in. I wouldn't hike offroad in it, and I wouldn't plan to walk across a city in it, but if walking to supplement another form of transit, I wouldn't hesitate to don the Plano. It's quite a comfortable shoe, and I find myself wearing it frequently. I regularly drive a sports car with a tight pedal box, a medium sized sports sedan, and a large pickup truck, all with manual transmissions. Although the Speed Cat or Drift Cat probably work better in the sports car, the Plano is the only shoe I own that works well in all three machines, being small enough to fit in the sports car (though Cats are better), and big enough to work in the truck (which was probably designed to account for large work boots). Looks: It's conservative for a sneaker and works with a wider variety of outfits than a Cat. I find the look handsome, but even if you don't agree, it's at least unobtrusive. Durability: Too soon to tell, but this appears to be a well-built shoe. If it lasts even halfway decently, I hope it's still being made when I need to replace it. Fit: The first thing you need to do before buying Pumas for the first time is try some on and compare your Puma size to whatever size reference you normally use and see if there is a differential. There is for me, but it is consistent, and I've not had a problem with Puma fit so long as I have corrected for that differential. That being done, the fit of the Plano is perfect for my slightly wide foot. I don't normally need extra width shoes, but Drift Cats take me a while to break in as they stretch. These needed no special break-in and are snug but not tight in every dimension. November 29, 2013
